What’s New in Laparoscopy?laparoscope
Laparoscopy is the use of small scopes, cameras, and instruments to perform surgical operations in the abdomen. The advantages of laparoscopy are many. These include smaller incisions, less pain, faster recovery, less stress on the body, fewer wound infections and less visible scars on the abdomen. The disadvantages are that an operation sometimes takes a bit longer laparoscopically. All Princeton Surgical Associates’ physicians are trained in laparoscopy and perform it frequently. Dr. Jordan, Dr. Davison, and Dr. Dhir specialize in surgical laparoscopy. Dr. Davison applies these same principles in chest surgery.

Operations that can be done laparoscopically are constantly expanding. Currently we are doing the following operations laparoscopically:

Laparoscopic Appendectomy
Laparoscopic adrenal surgery
Laparoscopic stomach surgery
Laparoscopic bile duct exploration
Laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair
Laparoscopic small bowel surgery

Laparoscopic retroperitoneal or lymph node biopsy
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)
Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (a stomach wrap for reflux symptoms)
Laparoscopic Incisional hernia repairs (usually with mesh)
Laparoscopic lysis of adhesions (for internal scars causing blockages or pain)
Laparoscopic colon removal (for polyps, diverticulitis, or tumors)
Laparoscopic umbilical or ventral hernia repairs (with or without mesh)

The newest type of laparoscopic surgery is “single port” laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Davison has pioneered this technique at the University Medical Center at Princeton.

Laparoscopic surgery may not be possible in all situations and the surgeon will discuss with you the possibilities that open surgery may be required. Prior surgery does not rule out a laparoscopic approach but may make a combination approach a safer option for some patients. Not all patients are candidates for this type of surgery. Your PSA surgeon will be happy to discuss whether laparoscopic surgery is appropriate for you.
